Abstract:

Telecommunication tower is an important component of the basic infrastructure of communication systems and thus preserving them in events of natural disasters - such as a severe earthquake - is of high priority. In past studies, researchers have mostly considered the effects of wind and earthquake-induced loads on 3-legged (triangular cross-section) self-supporting steel telecommunication towers. In this study, the seismic sensitivity of 4-legged telecommunication towers is investigated based on modal superposition analysis. For this purpose, ten of the existing 4-legged self-supporting telecommunication towers in Iran are studied under the effects of wind and earthquake loadings. To consider the wind effects on the prototypes, the provisions of the TIA/EIA code are employed and the wind is treated as a static load throughout the analysis. In addition, to consider the earthquake effects on the models, the standard design spectrum based on the Iranian seismic code of practice and the normalized spectra of Manjil, Tabas and Naghan earthquakes have been applied. Since Iran is considered to be located in a high seismic risk region, a base design acceleration of A = 0.35 g is used for normalization of the spectra. It was observed that in the case of towers with rectangular cross section, the effect of simultaneous earthquake loading in two orthogonal directions is important. At the end, a number of empirical relations are presented that can help designers to approximate the dynamic response of towers under seismic loadings.

Earthquake Amplification Factors for Self-supporting 4-legged Telecommunication Towers

Telecommunication towers are among the few steel structures that little attention has been paid to their seismic behavior in existing design codes. Due to lack of design provisions, the designers apply the existing building design codes to telecommunication towers. However, the seismic behavior and response of telecommunication towers is very different from that of building structures. For exam...

The Effect of Soil Type on Seismic Response of Tall Telecommunication Towers with Random Vibration Analysis

Random vibration analysis of tall structures faces multiple problems due to the large number of elements and high degrees of freedom; that is why this type of analysis is mostly used in simple structures and low degrees of freedom. In the past two decades, changes have been occurred in this type of analysis to be used in complex structures and the large number of elements. Pseudo-Excitation Met...

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND STRUCTURAL OPTIMIZATION OF SELF-SUPPORTING TRUSS TOWERS TO SUPPORT A LARGE WIND TURBINE

This article aims to study the self-supporting truss towers used to support large wind turbines. The goal is to evaluate and validate numerically by finite element method the structural analysis when the lattice structures of the towers of wind turbines are subjected to static loads and these from common usage. With this, it is expected to minimize the cost of transportation and installation of...

Computation of Effective Bending Stiffness of RC Telecommunication Towers

We present some results of the application of optimization techniques to experimental data for the determination of the effective bending stiffness of cross-sections of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The objective is to determine parameters of unstressed sections for the correct computation of the displacements of these structures and possible applications on structural failure theory. Th...

Legged Self - Manipulation AARON

This paper introduces self-manipulation as a new formal design methodology for legged robots with varying ground interactions. The term denotes a set of modeling choices that permit a uniform and bodycentric representation of the equations of motion—essentially a guide to the selection and configuration of coordinate frames. We present the hybrid system kinematics, dynamics, and transitions in ...

An Empirical Formula for Seismic Test of Telecommunication Equipments

Antiseismic property of telecommunication equipment is very important for the grasp of the damage and the restoration after earthquake. Telecommunication business operators are regulating seismic standard for their equipments. These standards are organized to simulate the real seismic situations and usually define the minimum value of first natural frequency of the equipments or the allowable m...
